*DESCRIPTION: The Istituto di Scienze del Mare (ISMAR)- Sezione di Bologna was formely known as Istituto di Geologia Marina (IGM) of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). CNR is the National Council for Scientific Research in Italy, operating on behalf of the Ministero dell'Universita' e della Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica.

The ISMAR-IGM carries out geological and oceanographic research projects in the Mediterranean Sea (with particular emphasis on the Italian seas) and in other areas of the world (Antarctica, Atlantic Ocean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean).
The main research areas of the Insitute are:
