INSTRUMENT NAME : gas chromatograph (GC) with capilary column

MANUFACTURER : CG : Hewlett Packard 5890, main column: J&W Scientific, Trap filling: Alltech, Valves: Valco Instruments

MANUFACTURING DATE :1992

SERIAL NUMBER : GC Hewlett Packard 5890

DESCRIPTION :
The gaschromatographic system at Bremen has been custom designed to allow high precision measurements of four CFC species (CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113 and CCl4). The combination of a capillary column with a low-volume trap yields high resolution in the chromatograms and full seperation of peaks. The system is fully automated and allows eight water samples and associated calibration measurements to be carried out un-attented. Water samples are transferred into the system by means of flow-through containers, incorporating glass ampoules. Generaly, measurements will be carried out immeadiately after sampling at sea, but alternatively the ampoules can be flame-sealed, allowing sample storage for later analysis ashore. Standard gas is used for calibration and all concentrations are reported on the SIO93 scale. The overall precision for surface waters amounts to ± 0.6% (CFC-11, CFC-12) ± 1.5% (CFC-113) and ± 2.4% (CCl4). Detection limits are 0.002, 0.002, 0.008 and 0.003 pmol/kg for CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113 and CCl4.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS :
The gas chromatograph is a Hewlett Packard 5890, the main column GS GASPRO (ID 0.32 mm, 30 m long) is manufactored by J&W Scientific and the trap column (1mm ID, 10 cm long) is filled with Unibeads 2S (Alltech).
