*DATASET-NAME : Hydrology of the water column, of the sediment/bottom water interface and of sediment pore waters in the Adriatic and in the Ionian Sea.
*TIME-PERIOD : 1997 to present
*GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE : Southern Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea
*PROJECT : MASTIII/MTPII/MATER, MAss Transfer and Ecosystem Response
*PARAMETERS : Dissolved nutrients (NO2, NH4, NO3, PO4, SiO2), total dissolved nitrogen and phosphate (TDN and TDP), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved oxygen in the water column; dissolved nutrients in sediment pore water and bottom water incubations.
*INSTRUMENTS : Dissolved inorganic nutrients (NO2, NH4, NO3, PO4, SiO2) were measured on board using a continuous flow analysis system (autoanalyser) equipped with Chemlab (March 1997) or Technicon (August 1997) colorimeters. TDN e TDP were analysed in the laboratory with the same system, after complete oxydation with an UV irradiation unit (Thalassia mod RFC 239); dissolved oxygen was measured on board with a potentiometric titrator (Metrhom); DOC was analysed in the laboratory, with a High Temperature Catalytic Oxidation analyser (Dohrmann DC-190).
*SUMMARY :
Samples from the water column were collected from Niskin bottles; samples for
dissolved nutrients were collected in plastic vials and immediatlely analysed; samples
for DOC were pre-filtered with glass fiber filters and collected in pre-washed and
pre-combusted pirex tubes and frozen for analysis in the lab; samples for TDN and
TDP were pre-filtered with glass fiber filters and collected in acid pre-washed high
density poly-ethylene 50 ml vials and frozen for analysis in the lab; samples for
dissolved oxygen were collected in fixed volume glass bottles and immediatlely analysed.
Samples for pore water and bottom water incubation nutrient analysis were provided by
other partners, and were handled as the samples from the water column; no dilution on
analysis was performed.
NO2, NO3, PO4, SiO2 and dissolved oxygen were analysed in all stations on the whole water
column; TDN, TDP and DOC were collected in chosen stations and at selected depths. NO2,
NH4, NO3, PO4, SiO2 were analysed in the sediments and bottom water.
