Objectives :
The aim of the MATER research project is to co-ordinate physical and
chemical oceanographic observations on the subsurface (both intermediate and deep) water
mass formation and spreading to the assessment of the biogeochemical processes controlling
their signatures, which allow their pathways in the Mediterranean sub basins to be traced.
The Work Pakage 3 Multidisciplinary studies in the Adriatic Ionic Subbasin, in particular
is focused on the area including the Southern Adriatic and the Northern part of the Ionian
basin.
The main purposes of the fifth cruise were: - to carry out a seasonal hydrological survey;
- to achieve time series collection of donwward particle fluxes and current measurements
(recovery and deployment of 6 moorings); to investigate the Sediment Oxigen Demand, the
organic matter mineralization rate and the sediment-water exchange of nutrients; to sample
sediment for geochemical analyses.

Description of the field observations :
1) hydrology: CTD profiles, water sampling for chemical (D.O., nutrients,
suspended matter, alkalinity, etc.) and biological analyses (chlorophyll a, phytoplankton
standing crop and taxonomy);
2) primary production in situ incubation coupled with drifting trap experiments;
3) recovery and deployment of moorings;
4) deployment of benthic lander for sediment-water in situ incubation;
5) sediment sampling for geochemical investigations through analyses of org C, N,
biogenic silica, major, minor and trace elements, natural radioisotopes for estimating
sediment accumulation rates and other processes like bioturbation;
6) sea drifter launches to follow the behaviour of the surface currents of the Adriatic
Sea;
7) XBTs launches to define the meso-scale features in addition to general sub-basin
scale circulation regime.
