Objectives :

The primary goal of this investigation within the Adriatic/Ionian sea workpackage is to establish the mechanism of Adriatic Deep Water (ADW) formation. The experiment was specifically designed:
(i) to determine the existence of different deep water masses in the Southern Adriatic; (ii) to identify and localize possible sites of convective processes; (iii) to characterize the processes by which the ADW is formed; (iv) to identify and quantify the transport and dispersion of ADW through the time of surveys and moorings positioned across the Otranto Strait. The work and study objectives of this survey were to cover the preconditioning phase of ADW formation. In fact, the topography of Southern Adriatic is primarly responsible for localizing the baroclinic cyclonic circulation which combined with strong surface cooling and evaporation processes due to outbreaks of cold and dry air of Euro-Asiatic origin blowing directly onto the Adriatic Sea, may be constitute the nessary ingredients for an open-ocean deep convection process.

Description of the field observations :

1) Hydrology: Air-sea interface parameter measurements, CTD casts, water sampling for chemical (Dissolved Oxygen, Nutrients, DOC, TDN, TDP, Total Suspended Matter, PON) and biological analysis (chlorophyll-a );
2) XBTs launches to define the meso-scale features in addition to general sub-basin scale circulation regime;
3) Lagrangian drifters launches to follow the behaviour of the surface circulation of the Adriatic Sea.
