Objectives :
The Work Package 120 "Sicily Strait Observations", in particular is focused on
the evaluation of the water and bio-geochemical fluxes through the Sicily, Sardinia and
Tunisia region. A peculiar attention was also paid to the validation of the most widely
empirical formulae used to estimate the radiative fluxes over the Mediterranean Sea.
The main objectives of the first cruise, were to carry out an hydrological and biochemical
survey in the study area and to deploy three moorings equipped with current meters. One of
the mooring was placed in the narrow and the deep passage near Sicily. The other two chains
were located in the wide Tunisian passage. Another task of the experiment was to realise
direct measurements of solar and atmospheric radiation over the sea.

Description of the field observations :
1) hydrology: CTD profiles (temperature, conductivity, oxygen, fluorescence);
2) hydrology: water sampling for biochemical analyses ( dissolved oxygen,
salinity, nutrients, dissolved organic nitrogen, dissolved organic phosphorus, dissolved
organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen, clorofill pigments );
3) deployment of moorings;
4) irradiance measurements ( solar and atmospheric radiation );
5) sea surface temperature measurements ( skin and bulk );
6) meteorological measurements ( air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed
and direction, air pressure, dry and wet temperature ).
