Data Description

The Adriatic Sea Data Set includes part of the EU-MEDAR/MEDATLAS II Database and has been obtained as proceeding of the fruitful collaboration undertaken between the instituted operating in the Adriatic Sea.

The Adriatic Sea Data Set has been archived in EU-MEDAR/MEDATLAS II Format and quality controlled following the standard guidelines suggested in the EU-MEDAR/MEDATLAS II Protocol.

• The historical data included in the MODB and the MEDATLAS 97.

• Further historical biochemical data included in the World Ocean Database 1998.

• Two different collections of historical data released by Italian research institutes, namely the Adriatic BioChemical Dataset (ABCD) version 4 (Zavatarelli et al., 1998) and Adriatic Temperature, Oxygen and Salinity (ATOS.1) data set (Artegiani et al., 1997). The two collections were initially containing respectively 5.522 stations and 5.480 stations, and were divided by bibliographical reference. After the check for duplicates, more than 2.700 stations were eliminated from MEDATLAS I, almost 100 stations were manually eliminated from ABCD version 4 and more than 5.300 redundant stations have been automatically and manually eliminated from ATOS.1 data set.
